Visiting Rome
Rome is not only the capital of Italy but one of the most popular and
most visited cities in the country. There is much to see and do here
making it an ideal vacation destination. Rome is one of the few cities
that has retained much of the glories of medieval Rome as is evidenced
in its buildings, especially the museums. There is also an incredible
selection of restaurants, cafes, and nightclubs.
Because of the tremendous history surrounding this city, you will want
to take advantage of visiting the historic district of Rome. It's small
enough to walk around, even though the actual city is quite vast. Some
of the most popular historic monuments are the Colosseum, the Pantheon,
the Catacombs, the Roman Forum, the Baths of Caracalla, the Arch of
Constantine, Trajan's Column and Market, and various Basilicas to
simply name a few.
There are architecturally wondrous cathedrals to be viewed in Vatican
City. You definitely don't want to miss a trip to the Sistine Chapel.
Fountains, statues, art galleries, and beautifully landscaped parks are
also in abundance. The most famous fountain, Fontana di Trevi has a
legend that if you throw a coin in the water over your left shoulder
you will be guaranteed to soon return to this lovely city.
Even though there is rich history here, there is also a lot of modern
culture to experience as well. Throughout the year various fashion
shows are held at the Piazza di Spagna, home of the Spanish Steps
(which are used as the catwalk). There is also great shopping to be
found here.
The Piazza Navona is another favorite shopping area, especially during
the Christmas season. It's known for selling toys, sweets, and
Christmas decorations. Fountains, statues, and sculptures are very
plentiful in this area. Other shopping areas to check out are Piazza
del Popolo, Via del Corso, Trastevere, Porta Portese, Viale Marconi,
Piazza Vittorio, and Via del Governo Vecchio.
While naturally the cuisine of choice in Rome would be Italian, there
are enough restaurants to choose from that will please any palate.
There are also plenty of nightclubs that keep the nightlife in Rome
hopping. Some of the most popular are Piper Club, Gilda, BigMama
(blues, jazz), Alien Disco Club, and Classico Village (art exhibits,
live concerts, very multi-cultural).
As you can see there is just too much to see and do in Rome to make
