Winter in Rome

Winter's Glory of Rome

We often hear about the glory that was Rome in ways that it implies Rome is any less glorious today.  This could not be further from the truth.  Rome is still glorious today as it was in its heyday although with a few small differences.

The Eternal City is not the Capital City of World today but when it comes to tourism even in winter, Rome is something to behold.  Between summer and winter in Rome, you will be surprised to discover that there are more tourists in the colder months of the year.

Outdoors are Glorious

Even in winter, the sun generously shines through to illuminate Rome's most famous attractions.  Snow is uncommon in the city even in the dead of winter that it will only get cold and nippy.  Still, you can sit in one of the outdoor cafés and not freeze to death, which can be attributed to the outdoor heaters installed by the owners.

In many ways, you can tour the city as if it was fall and spring.  Just make sure to be properly attired in winter garb - coat, gloves and scarf, hat and sunglasses.  You will not want the whitewashed walls of the monuments reflecting the sun's rays into your eyes.

 Heavenly Glories

And since Rome is the location for the Vatican City, you will want to attend the Papal Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve as well as the reading of the papal Christmas message.  You should also stand in front of the famed life-size nativity scene in St. Peter's Square just to get into the spiritual roots of the holiday season.  You must also see the smaller nativity scenes in other churches in Rome although the statue of the baby Jesus is only added during Christmas Day itself.

Christmas in Rome officially starts on December 8 with the celebration of the Immaculate Conception festival and ends on January 6 the following year.  On this date, colorful floats and characters are paraded to the Vatican while the feast of Belfana is also being celebrated.  Catholics around the world will try to go to Rome on Christmas at least once in their lifetime, akin to the Islamic pilgrimage.

Glories in Shopping

If you are interested in making your own nativity scene, go to the Christmas Market at the Piazza Navona.   And after sprucing up your holiday apartment Christmas tree, you can proceed to buy presents in the many markets and shops of Rome.

The best thing about shopping in Rome during the winter season is the strings upon strings of lights all over the city.  It is almost like celebrating Christmas in ancient times except that the lights are electric, not from candles and lamps.

Food is the one of the souls of Christmas and Rome is never far behind in this regard.  You can buy everything you will need to stock up your holiday apartment Rome in all things Italian.  And of course, Christmas will not be complete without the gifts.

Rome is as glorious today as it was in ancient times.  Just make sure that you have booked your holiday apartment in advance through online methods because good accommodation is an important part of enjoying Rome in all its glory today.

Enjoy your visit to this amaizing city and do no forget to check its marvellous Roman architecture
